How to Cross Country Ski UPHILL — Key Tips (pt 2 of 2)
Here are a few key tips on how to glide up a hill—my favorite part of XC, but one which balks many. Try these simple drills, then go ski behind a good skier. And take a lesson! (Part 1 showed a few general key tips.) Note: this Series shows the standard basics of rhythm and Sport/Racing. I have other videos that show Touring techniques more suited to Everyday-type Casual skiers. Caution: In this video I forget to say my favorite ski word — “glide” — enough, plus I goof up a couple ideas. I say putting your full weight on a ski lets you grip, but that’s when you glide. You grip when your feet pass each other, you drop down a bit, flex your ankle, tilt forward, then plant your foot—this “pounces” MORE than your bodyweight and lets you grip. Next glitch: I say it’s falling body weight that propels you, but it’s also a forward body ANGLE that lets you easily pole and kick to the rear, sending you gliding forward. Whew!
